Old Fashioned Standards in a Modern Business World
In this modern world communication is at your fingertips no matter where you are. You can keep up with the latest news, and conducting business transactions outside of your office, regardless of time of day. It is important to know how to use your mobile phone so you will be able to make a good impression on a potential client, or so you can get a better deal for themselves...

There was once a time when you could leave your home or your office and you were free. No one would be able to contact you while you were out enjoying yourself. Naturally, there was a downside to this freedom. It was difficult for you to contact anyone yourself. If you needed to make a telephone call, you might have queued for a long time at a public telephone box. You could not conduct any business away from your home or office and you could not telephone for help in an emergency. Today, almost everyone has a mobile phone and you can contact them twenty-four hours a day.

If you wish to make a good impression on both the person you call and the people that are around you, you should follow business etiquette.

  1. Turn your mobile phone off during business meetings. Your co-workers deserve your undivided attention during a business meeting. If you are expecting an important business call, turn your mobile onto silent mode.
  2. Do not answer your telephone when you are conducting a business meeting or serving a customer. You may lose a valuable customer if you ignore him in order to talk to somebody else.
  3. Try to avoid using your mobile phone to make business calls when you are traveling on public transport, or driving your car. You will not sound very professional to a potential client if he can hear the noises associated with a public place, or if you cannot give him your complete attention because you must concentrate on driving. Although hands-free phones allow you to speak while you are driving, you cannot always give a business call the attention it deserves when you are traveling in traffic.
  4. If you are out in public and the mobile phone rings, keep your voice low and try to keep the conversation to a minimum. It is very difficult to gauge how loudly you are talking when there are people nearby. Most mobile phone users tend to speak more loudly than necessary when they are in a public place.
  5. Send text messages that are clear and easy to understand. Do not shorten words or spell words incorrectly. Using abbreviations are fine when you send a text message to a friend, but you should always type words in full when you are sending a text message to a business associate.
