Filters, lubricants and crankcase heaters
Inlet gas can contain particles of dirt inside the path, especially on a new system. Suction strainers or traps are provided to catch such a mess and be easily accessible for cleaning on large installations.
All but the smallest compressors will have a strainer or filter in the lubricating oil circuit. Filters in a settling tank, as a rule, self-slot of the drive type. Larger machines may have a fabric filter, than any other type, for example, in the automotive practice. Piston compressors have greases are of small size and compulsory deliveries of oil with gear or Crescent pumps. Sight glass, as a rule, are equipped with semi-hermetic and open compressors to specify the level of oil.
When the compressor is in standby mode, lubricating oils will contain a certain amount of dissolved refrigerant depending on the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant itself. At the time of launch, the oil will be allowed to overshadow this refrigerant and as the suction pressure falls, gas will boil out of the oil, causing it to foam.
To limit the amount of refrigerant in the butter until the acceptable volume, heating devices usually come with Carter and United to remain in operation whenever the compressor in stand-by mode.
