Freon Reaction on Plastics

Brief description of influence Freon compounds on different plastic materials. However, compatibility should be tested for specific applications. Differences in the polymer structure and molecular weight, plasticizers, temperature, pressure, and can change the resistance to plastic to Freon connection.

Teflon TFE-fluorocarbon resin: No swelling observed when immersed in Refrigerant fluids, but some diffusion find with CFC-12, CFC-22.

Polychlorotrifluoroethylene: a small tumor, but, as a rule, suitable for use Freon connections.

Polyvinyl alcohol: No exposed connections Freon, but are very sensitive to water. Used, in particular, of pump-compressor pipes with outer protective coating.

Vinyl: Resistance Freon compounds depends on vinyl type and plasticizer. Significant differences found. Samples must be tested before use.

Orlon acrylic fiber: is generally suitable for use with CFC compounds.

Nylon: generally suitable for use Freon connection, but may, as a rule, become brittle at high temperatures in the presence of water or air.

Tests 250F (121C), CFC-12, CFC-22 showed the presence of water or alcohol, to be undesirable. Adequate testing should be conducted.

Polyethylene: May be suitable for some applications at room temperature. However, it should be carefully checked, as significantly different results were found with different samples.

Lucite acrylic resin (methacrylate polymers): Dissolved Freon-22. However, as a rule, suitable for use with CFC-12, and CFC-114 for a short exposure. The long exposure, it tends to crack, passion, and become cloudy. Use Freon 113 may be questionable. It probably should not be used CFC-11.

Cast Lucite acrylic resin: It is much more resistant to solvents, than pressed resin. This can probably be used with most
Freon connections.

Polystyrene: found Significant differences in individual samples. However, as a rule, are not suitable for use Freon connections. Some applications may be all right with Freon-114.

Phenolic resins: Usually does not affect Freon connections. However, the resin of this type may be quite different. Samples must be tested before use.

Epoxy resins Resistant to most solvents and fully suitable for use with CFC compounds.

Cellulose acetate or nitrate: Suitable for use Freon connections. Delrin-acetal resin: Suitable for use Freon connections in most conditions.

Elastomers: Significant differences is in action Freon connections on elastomers. The effect depends on the specific connection and the type of elastomer. In almost all cases, a satisfactory combination can be found. In some cases, the presence of other materials such as oil, may lead to unexpected results. Thus, preliminary tests of the system involved is recommended.
