Technical information Industrial Ice Bank Controls

Ice Bank Monitors

Many types of coolers, vending machines and other medium temperature refrigeration systems use ice banks to provide a reserve power cooling. In periods when the system cooling demand, low Bank formed ice around the evaporator, the figure 8-84. When demand increases, cooling offered ice helps the refrigeration system.

A typical system of this type is found in some machines with drinks. Ice built up during the night or low activity hours. It is then used to cool drinks during periods of high activity. Another use of this type of refrigeration would be in an air conditioning system is used on a periodic basis. Example is the system in the building of the Church. Ice xvould be built during the week and is used for cooling a building for the weekend,

Control needed to limit the amount of ice that is formed. Normal temperature control cannot distinguish between ice and water, as can be present at 32F (0C). Ice management of the Bank was developed. He can determine the presence of ice sensing pressure change.

This type of control uses the sensing bulb, consisting of two compartments separated by a membrane.

Cm. Fig. 8-85. One side contains water. When frozen, the water expands and bends the membrane. The other side contains a fluid that passes membrane movement up to the head sensing bulb. This, in turn, carries out the control switch. The switch disables the compressor, as a result of melting of the ice. Cycle solutions for detection and ice can then begirt again.

Fig. 8-86 shows how the ice Bank control is set to control the size of the ice Bank. Ice forms about 1/8 inch (3 mm) beyond the external sensor mounting lamp before the compressor is turned off.
