Electric drier works on the principle of cooling. It removes moisture from the air with the passage of air through the coil. The moisture in the air condenses to form water, which then runs away coil into a collecting tray or a bucket. The amount of water removed from the air varies, depending on the relative humidity and volume of the lot, the draining. In places with high humidity and temperature, 3 to 4 gallons of water per day, as a rule, can be extracted from the air in a medium size house.

Desiccant is first introduced into operation, it will remove a relatively large amount of moisture, until relative humidity in the area of drying is reduced to a value where moisture damage will not occur. Once this point is reached, the amount of moisture removed from the air, will be much less. This decrease moisture removal indicates that the drier is working normally and that it has reduced the relative humidity in the room or area to a safe value.

Performance of the unit must be judged on the elimination of dampness and associated odours and the amount of moisture, which is removed and deposited in the bucket. A dehumidifier can not act as a cooling conditioner premises or land drainage. In operation, the air that is dried in passing over the coil, slightly compressed, raising the temperature of the surrounding air, which reduces the relative humidity of the air.
